EZEQUIEL ALVAREZ CASTRO

Ezequiel Alvarez Castro is a Professor at the University of Santiago de Compostela, affiliated with the Faculty of Pharmacy and Department of Pharmacology, Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Technology. He leads the CCM Cellular and Molecular Cardiology Research Unit and is part of the Center for Research in Molecular Medicine and Chronic Diseases (CIMUS). His research focuses on cardiovascular pathophysiology, with emphasis on biomarker discovery, endothelial cell dysfunction, and advanced glycation end products (AGEs). He holds a PhD from the same university (2002), specializing in flavonoid vascular effects and antioxidant properties.

Research interests include molecular cardiology, microfluidic biomedical devices, and the role of inflammation/oxidative stress in cardiovascular diseases. His work bridges basic science and translational medicine, developing in vitro models like organ-on-a-chip systems to study endothelial and cardiac pathologies.

Publications span biomarker identification for heart failure prognosis, endothelial cell protective mechanisms, and material science applications in vascular modeling. Notable projects include evaluating anticoagulants (e.g., edoxaban), AGEs' role in diabetic complications, and the biocompatibility of novel materials for medical devices.

Affiliated with CIMUS, his interdisciplinary approach integrates pharmacology, bioengineering, and clinical cardiology. Current research highlights include microfluidic platforms for disease modeling and therapeutic testing, as well as the mechanistic understanding of atrial fibrillation and post-infarction remodeling.
