Emel Arik is an Associate Professor in the Department of Journalism at Akdeniz University's Faculty of Communication, where she has held academic positions since 2009. She obtained her PhD in Communication (2013), MA in Journalism (2008), and BA in Journalism (2005) all from Akdeniz University. Her career progression includes roles as Lecturer (2010-2014), Assistant Professor (2014-2019), and Associate Professor (2019-present).
Her research focuses on contemporary media landscapes with emphasis on:
- Media representations in political and cultural contexts
- Digital transformation of journalism practices
- Ideological analysis of media discourse
- Social impacts of new media technologies
- Cultural studies and audience reception
Dr. Arik's publication portfolio demonstrates strong focus on media representation, digital culture, and ideological analysis. Recent works explore political communication (2025), mental health reporting (2024), and sustainability communication (2024), while earlier research examined journalism ethics, celebrity culture, and intercultural communication.
She has supervised 16 graduate theses covering diverse topics including AI journalism, political representation, digital privacy, and media representations of LGBTQ+ communities. Her mentorship spans both Master's and PhD candidates researching contemporary Turkish media landscapes.
