ELENA PALOMO DEL BARRIO is the Scientific Director of the Thermal Energy Storage Area at CIC energiGUNE since 2017, holding an Ikerbasque Professor position. She leads research on advanced materials and technologies for thermal energy storage, including phase change materials (PCMs), solid-state reactions, and high-temperature systems. Previously, she held roles such as Research Professor at Institut de Mécanique et d’Ingénierie (Bordeaux) and Researcher at CIEMAT (Madrid).
Dr. Palomo has a PhD in Physics from Universidad Complutense de Madrid (1992). Her research focuses on developing sustainable and efficient energy storage solutions, with emphasis on applications in renewable energy systems and industrial processes. She has authored over 90 papers, co-authored a book on thermal problem resolution, and holds patents in composite materials and catalytic systems.
Key contributions include the design of shape-stabilized PCMs, optimization of peritectic compounds, and the creation of the Master's program "Energy and Development" at the University of Bordeaux. She has led 6 European projects and collaborated with industries like Abengoa, directing projects with a cumulative budget of €3 million. Her work spans thermal characterization techniques, corrosion mitigation in molten salts, and hydrogen production via thermochemical cycles.
Dr. Palomo has supervised over 12 doctoral theses and 9 courses, emphasizing interdisciplinary education in energy storage. Her lab at CIC energiGUNE focuses on materials innovation for industrial heat processes and sustainable fuels, with active participation in global conferences and industry partnerships.
