E.W.T.M. Heurkens

E.W.T.M. Heurkens is an Assistant Professor of Urban Development Management at the Department of Management in the Built Environment (MBE), Delft University of Technology. He specializes in sustainable private-sector-led urban development projects, with a focus on public-private partnerships and real estate development. His research explores decision-making logics of private actors in sustainable urban projects and institutional frameworks for co-creating sustainable urban solutions. He coordinates the TU Delft’s involvement in the Dutch 'Stedelijke Transformatie' urban transformation program and leads the EU-funded POPS for Youth project. He is also part of the NWO-funded TranCiBo initiative on circular construction practices.

His international comparative research spans Anglo-Saxon countries (UK, US, AUS, CAN, HK) and contributes to European projects. He advises Dutch ministries, municipalities, and companies on sustainable urban development strategies. Recent activities include talks on innovative financing for urban transformation and lessons from international urban regeneration cases like King's Cross, London.

Research interests include private-sector roles in urban sustainability, governance innovations, and circular economy transitions. Key projects involve process innovations for urban transformation and analyzing privately-owned public spaces for youth engagement. His work bridges academic insights with practical tools for urban planners and developers.
