E. Arets serves as Group Leader for Sustainable Forest Ecosystems at Wageningen University & Research in the Netherlands. With over 155 research outputs including reports, articles, and datasets, Dr. Arets leads significant research in greenhouse gas emissions, tropical forest ecology, and climate change impacts, particularly through the LULUCF (Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry) sector.
Research interests focus on greenhouse gas accounting, tropical forest dynamics, biodiversity patterns, and climate change impacts on forest ecosystems. Key research areas include emission factors for grasslands and croplands, wood product lifecycle analysis, tropical forest responses to climate change, and biodiversity-carbon relationships in forest ecosystems. The work spans both Dutch environmental policy contexts and global tropical forest studies.
Recent publications demonstrate significant contributions to understanding how tropical forests are responding to climate change, with particular attention to species composition shifts, wood density variations, and carbon stock dynamics across South American forests. The research portfolio shows strong integration between national greenhouse gas reporting requirements and fundamental ecological research.
Dr. Arets leads multiple active projects including KD-2025-034 Korte koolstofkringloop landbouw en landgebruik, Mondiaal bosbeleid en duurzaam landgebruik, and ADD Doelmatigheid van bosmaatregelen NAPRO, with funding extending through 2026. The work has received significant attention with media coverage in Dutch outlets and policy references.
