Dr. Désirée Vanderwel is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry at The University of Winnipeg, affiliated with the Richardson College for the Environment and Science Complex. She specializes in pheromone biosynthesis research, focusing on insect communication mechanisms in beetles like Tenebrio molitor. Her work bridges biochemical studies with ecological impacts, aiming to inform pest control and beneficial species management.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Chemistry, Simon Fraser University (1991)
- B.Sc. in Biochemistry (Honours), University of Victoria (1981)
Research: Dr. Vanderwel investigates pheromone production in beetles to understand their biological interactions and environmental roles. Her studies address both economic pest impacts and the ecological value of beneficial beetle species. Key themes include biochemical pathways in pheromone synthesis and applications for sustainable pest management.
Awards:
- Outstanding Manitoba Chemist of the Year
Teaching: She instructs undergraduate courses in organic chemistry, biochemistry, and molecular enzymology, along with supervising research projects. Her lab spaces are located in 3RC033 and 3RC031.
