Dylan B. Fitz is an Associate Professor of Economics at Lawrence University, where he has been teaching since 2017. He currently serves as the chair of the Economics Department. Prior to joining Lawrence, he taught for four years at Davidson College.
His educational background includes:
- Ph.D. and M.A. in Agricultural and Applied Economics from the University of Wisconsin, Madison
- A.B. in Politics from Princeton University, with certificates in Latin American studies and political economy
Professor Fitz specializes in development economics, with research focused on evaluating social programs and understanding the causes of poverty. His teaching spans several key areas:
- Development economics and Latin American economic development
- Economics of altruism and effective altruism
- Economic growth and poverty traps
- Advanced econometrics
Professor Fitz is particularly passionate about his Effective Altruism course, which examines how economic thinking can be applied to determine the most effective ways to help others. He champions the book 'Poor Economics' and believes economics is a tool that 'can help us make the world a better place—to try to understand the world first of all, and then to improve it for people.'
His approach to teaching emphasizes that 'effort is the biggest determinant of success in class' and he designs courses to help students master material through increasingly challenging questions.
Outside of academia, Professor Fitz enjoys trail running, cross-country skiing, and soccer, though he notes that much of his time is now spent with his three daughters.
