Dwana Waugh is an Associate Professor of History and Division Head of the Social Sciences & Humanities Division at Sweet Briar College. She holds a B.A. from Randolph-Macon Woman’s College and an M.A. and Ph.D. in American History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her teaching emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, including historical simulations like Reacting to the Past and digital tools such as ArcGIS and StoryMaps. Her research focuses on historical memory, African American educational history, and the intersection of race, politics, and education policy in the U.S. South.
Dr. Waugh’s work often involves community collaboration, such as studying Sweet Briar College’s diverse history and partnering with initiatives like the Lowcountry Digital History Initiative. She has led efforts in diversity, equity, and inclusion as chair of the Presidential DEI Taskforce and co-chair of the Campus Climate Assessment Working Group. Her publications include reviews of Civil Rights Movement scholarship and analyses of labor strikes and school desegregation politics.
