Prof. Duur Aanen is a Personal Professor at the Laboratory of Genetics, affiliated with Wageningen University & Research. His research focuses on fungal symbiosis, particularly the mutualistic relationship between termites and their cultivated fungi (Termitomyces). He explores evolutionary biology, mycology, and microbial ecology, with notable contributions to understanding fungal genome evolution, symbiotic mechanisms, and mycelium longevity. Aanen leads interdisciplinary projects on polar fungi biogeography and fungal genomics in symbiotic systems. He supervises multiple PhD candidates and collaborates internationally on topics including fungal incompatibility and symbiont domestication. His work bridges basic science and applied research, addressing questions in microbial genetics and ecological adaptation.
Key projects include studies on fungal symbionts of termites, polar region fungal diversity, and the genomic basis of symbiotic domestication. He has contributed datasets on Termitomyces and Podaxis species, advancing understanding of fungal evolution and ecological roles. Media contributions highlight his expertise in fungal biology and evolutionary science.
