Durell Coleman is a Lecturer at the Center for Integrated Design at the University of Texas at Austin. He is the founder and CEO of DC Design, a social impact firm addressing systemic issues like poverty, criminal justice reform, and healthcare through human-centered design. Trained in mechanical engineering (B.S.) and sustainable design (M.S.) at Stanford University, he combines technical expertise with social innovation.
His teaching spans the Stanford d.school, Stanford Graduate School of Business, and UT Austin, focusing on Design Thinking, social impact, and leadership. He has engaged diverse audiences, from corporate executives to refugees, in designing solutions for complex challenges. His research underpins the 5 Systems of Black Inequality video series, exploring systemic inequality through a design lens.
Recognized with the Jefferson Award for Public Service, Coleman’s work reduces mass incarceration, homelessness, and Black infant mortality. His PBS documentary Extreme by Design highlights his approach to systemic change. Active in fostering inclusive education and community-driven solutions, he bridges academia, corporate, and nonprofit sectors to drive equitable outcomes.
