Professor Duncan Shrewsbury (they/them), known professionally as Dunx, serves as Professor of Medical Education & Primary Care at Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS). Alongside their academic role, they maintain active clinical practice as a GP in Brighton and as a gender identity specialist, ensuring their teaching and research remain grounded in real-world patient care. Professor Shrewsbury holds a Visiting Professor position at Trinity College Dublin's Faculty of Health Sciences (since 2023) and serves as an External Examiner for multiple prestigious medical schools including University of East Anglia, University of Sydney, and Imperial College London.
Professor Shrewsbury's educational journey includes a PhD from University of Exeter (2018), MBChB and BMedSc (Hons) in Neuroscience from University of Birmingham, MSc from Staffordshire University, and PGCert in Education from Open University. Their clinical qualifications include MRCGP, DRCOG, and DCH, demonstrating expertise across multiple medical domains.
At BSMS, Professor Shrewsbury serves as Deputy Lead for Curriculum Development and leads the Academic Clinical Fellowships program for GP training. Their teaching spans multiple areas including Clinical and Community Practice, Communication Skills, Interprofessional Education, and specialized modules on Gender and Healthcare, LGBTQ+ health inequalities, and care for trans* people in general practice.
Professor Shrewsbury was the first at BSMS to receive Principal Fellowship of Advance HE (PFHEA), recognizing their significant educational leadership. They currently serve as Co-Chair of the Society for Academic Primary Care and contribute to the Royal College of General Practitioners LGBT Steering Group, demonstrating national influence in medical education and healthcare equity.
