Harris specializes in emergent entrepreneurship, investigating how entrepreneurs operate outside conventional models—particularly in economically marginalized communities, across gender/racial divides, and within politically unstable or corrupt environments. As collection editor for the Emergent Entrepreneurship series, he documents lived experiences of "non-normal" entrepreneurs including those in gray/black markets and incarcerated individuals, challenging traditional frameworks that overlook systemic barriers and place-based constraints.
His educational philosophy centers on mentoring through field studies and developing potential at the intersection of person, physical space, and time. Harris previously served as the founding President of the Connecticut Consortium of Entrepreneurship Educators and actively promotes inclusive entrepreneurship education that resonates with diverse student identities.
Harris leads the Breakthrough Work Team initiative and develops frameworks for entrepreneurship in "places unexplored" by mainstream literature, aiming to create adaptable models for underserved entrepreneurs while emphasizing personal transformation and community-specific opportunity recognition.
