Douwe Biesma is a Professor of Data-driven Healthcare Improvement and Chairman of the Executive Board at Leiden University Medical Centre (LUMC) since 2020. He concurrently holds a Professorship in Internal Medicine at Utrecht University Medical Centre (UMC Utrecht). Previously, he served as Chairman of St. Antonius Hospital (2010–2020) and co-founded Santeon, a network of top clinical hospitals. His academic career includes a medical degree and PhD from Utrecht University (1994), with early research focused on hematological disorders and transfusion medicine. His current research emphasizes value-based healthcare, care quality optimization, and rare disease management.
