Dr. Douglas W. Winton is a Professor at the Eisenhower School of the National Defense University. A retired U.S. Army officer, he previously served as Chair of the Department of Military Strategy, Planning, and Operations and held the Henry L. Stimson Chair of Military Studies at the Army War College. His academic background includes a PhD in International Relations from Johns Hopkins SAIS, focusing on technology's role in urban combat.
Research interests center on military effectiveness in urban environments, information as a combat element, and campaign design. His work challenges the notion of urban combat as a 'great equalizer' through analyses of battles in Grozny, Fallujah, and Gaza. Publications include contributions to Urban Battlefields: Lessons Learned and Parameters.
Prior to academia, Winton commanded 2nd Battalion, 5th Field Artillery, and served in roles with the 101st Airborne Division and 3rd Infantry Division during Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. He remains active in military educational leadership and community engagement.
