Douglas W. Diamond is the Merton H. Miller Distinguished Service Professor of Finance at the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business, where he has been a faculty member since 1979. He was awarded the 2022 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for his pioneering work on banks and financial crises.
- Education: Bachelor's degree in economics from Brown University (1975), followed by master's degrees (1976, 1977) and a PhD (1980) in economics from Yale University.
Research Interests: Diamond’s work focuses on the theory of financial intermediaries, financial crises, and liquidity. His contributions include analyzing bank regulation, deposit insurance mechanisms, and the role of short-term debt in corporate finance. His scholarship bridges macroeconomic theory and practical financial systems, emphasizing the structural vulnerabilities of financial institutions.
Scientific Awards and Honors: In addition to the Nobel Prize, he has received prestigious awards such as the Onassis Prize (2018), CME Group-Mathematical Sciences Research Institute Prize (2016), and Morgan Stanley-American Finance Association Award (2012). He is a fellow of multiple institutions, including the Econometric Society and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Additional Roles: Diamond has held visiting professorships at Yale, MIT Sloan School of Management, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and the University of Bonn.
