Douglas Tillman is an Associate Professor and Graduate Program Chair in High Education Student Affairs and School Counseling at the University of Nebraska at Kearney (UNK). His academic journey began with a B.A. in Criminal Justice from UNK, followed by a M.A. in Community Counseling (now Clinical Mental Health) from UNK, and a Ph.D. in Counselor Education from the University of South Dakota. Before academia, he worked in law enforcement and later transitioned to counseling roles, including work with adolescents and private practice.
Research & Teaching: His expertise spans wellness, spirituality in counseling, solution-focused practices, and the ethical use of social media in counselor education. He teaches practicum and advanced practicum courses, emphasizing hands-on skills development. His 2011 dissertation explored counselors' confidence in addressing spirituality/religion with clients.
Professional Contributions: Tillman has conducted research on social media integration in counseling education and maintains affiliations with UNK's Department of Counseling, School Psychology, and Family Science. He previously taught as an adjunct instructor at UNK during his doctoral studies.
Personal Interests: A Green Bay Packers shareholder, car restorer (owning a restored 1971 Monte Carlo), traditional bow hunter, and father of two sons whom he mentors in hunting. His spouse is a drug and alcohol counselor at a Nebraska treatment center.
