Douglas Samuel serves as Professor in the Department of Psychological Sciences at Purdue University, leading the Samuel Assessment Methods for Personality and Psychopathology Lab (SAMPPL). His academic work uniquely bridges basic personality science and clinical psychopathology through dimensional modeling approaches.
His research program encompasses two primary domains:
- Personality Disorder Assessment: Investigating how maladaptive personality traits manifest within the Five-Factor Model framework to improve diagnostic precision and treatment planning
- Rural Mental Health: Pioneering studies on suicide risk factors among farmers, including development of the Agricultural Heritage measure to capture occupation-specific vulnerabilities
Methodologically, his work integrates clinician/peer reports, experience sampling, psychophysiology, and diverse statistical approaches to capture multi-source perspectives on psychological phenomena.
Professor Samuel's contributions are recognized through:
- Mid-Career Investigator Award (North American Society for Personality Disorders, 2023)
- Martin Mayman Award (Journal of Personality Assessment, 2019)
- James C. Naylor Teaching Excellence Award (2018)
- Gunderson Young Investigator Award (2011)
He currently teaches PSY 667 - Clinical (Personality) Assessment and serves on the Clinical Area DEI Committee. Actively recruiting graduate students for Fall 2025 admission, his lab provides training in advanced assessment techniques and rural mental health research. The SAMPPL lab maintains strong connections with clinical practitioners through its focus on translating dimensional models into real-world treatment settings.
The lab's current initiatives include refining dimensional assessment tools for clinical use and expanding rural mental health research through community partnerships with agricultural organizations.
