Douglas Portman is a Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Rochester, affiliated with the School of Arts & Sciences. His research focuses on understanding how biological sex modulates neuronal circuits and behavior in the nematode C. elegans, with particular emphasis on sex differences in neural circuit function and development. He holds a PhD and has been actively involved in mentoring PhD students in his lab.
Research Interests include:
- Genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying behavior and neural development in C. elegans
- Sex-specific modulation of shared neural circuits
- Integration of internal states (e.g., hunger, sex) into behavioral decision-making
His work employs C. elegans to study sensory processing, neuromodulatory pathways, and the molecular pathways linking sex, development, and environmental cues to circuit function. Recent findings highlight sex-dependent reconfiguration of sensory tuning and behavioral prioritization. While no formal awards are listed, his contributions to the field are reflected in over 50 peer-reviewed publications.
Advising: Currently accepting PhD students interested in neuroscience, developmental biology, and genetics. His lab integrates genetic, behavioral, and molecular approaches to study nervous system function.
