Dr. Douglas P Robertson is a Clinical Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at the University of Glasgow's School of Medicine, Dentistry & Nursing. He graduated with a BDS (Hons) from the University of Glasgow in 2002, winning the Cullen medal and the Lord Provost's prize for Clinical Dentistry. He completed his PhD in 2011 and passed his Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Exam in November 2013, receiving his CCST (Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training) in Restorative Dentistry in April 2014.
Dr. Robertson's research focuses on several key areas in dental science:
- The relationships between oral and systemic disease including periodontal disease
- The treatment and resistance of microbial biofilms in prosthodontics
- Antibiotic stewardship in dentistry
- Application of navigational and robotic technologies to dentistry
His work has resulted in numerous publications, particularly in the areas of dental infections, oral microbiology, and the application of technology to dental procedures. Recent research has focused on robotic dentistry, antimicrobial resistance, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on dental health services.
Dr. Robertson has received several prestigious awards including the Cullen medal, Lord Provost's prize for Clinical Dentistry, Deans medal for the highest overall mark in examinations, and the Sir Wilfred Fish prize by the British Society of Periodontology.
He has secured research funding from organizations including the British Ecological Society, National Institute for Health Research, and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. His current projects include studies on dynamic navigation in dentistry, pulpotomy for irreversible pulpitis, and risks associated with denture wearing.
Dr. Robertson is actively involved in teaching, serving as the teaching lead in Fixed Prosthodontics for the undergraduate BDS curriculum and participating in the MSc in Endodontics program. He has also developed curriculum for the BSc in Oral Health Science and holds a certificate in Academic Practice as a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
