Douglas Gittens is a Senior Lecturer and Course Leader at the School of Architecture, Design, and the Built Environment, Nottingham Trent University (NTU). He contributes to undergraduate and postgraduate modules in Interior Architecture and Design, focusing on design education and architectural representation. His career spans teaching roles at NTU since 2015, prior leadership at the University of Lincoln, and industry experience in architecture and design.
Research interests include architectural representation (e.g., contemporary perspective drawing and liminal space documentation), drawing as a creative and problem-solving tool, and spatial theory (e.g., absurd space, phenomenology, and adaptive reuse of buildings). He has authored/co-authored books and peer-reviewed articles on sketchbooks, digital vs. traditional design methods, and interior spatial theory.
External roles include serving as an External Examiner at the University of Northampton (2010–2015), Coventry University (2015–2020), and AUB (2022–present). He is affiliated with Interior Educators (IE), the Architectural Humanities Research Association (AHRA), and holds RIBA Part One and Two qualifications.
