Douglas Cawthorne

Douglas Cawthorne is a Reader in Digital Heritage at De Montfort University, affiliated with the Leicester School of Architecture within the Faculty of Arts, Design and Humanities. He is a UK Registered Architect and leads the Digital Building Heritage Group, focusing on digital reconstruction and accessible heritage technologies.

His research interests include digital heritage, 3D modeling of historical architecture, and inclusive design for visually impaired users. He specializes in the digital reconstruction of lost or damaged heritage sites, utilizing laser scanning, BIM, and virtual reality. His work bridges architecture, archaeology, and human-computer interaction, with a strong focus on public engagement and accessibility.

His recent publications reflect a consistent trend in digital reconstruction of historical buildings, authentication of archaeological reconstructions, and development of audio-tactile systems for inclusive heritage access.
