Douglas Bauer

Dr. Douglas Bauer is an Emeritus Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology & Biostatistics at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine. He has been a clinician-investigator in the Division of General Internal Medicine since 1992, focusing on osteoporosis, thyroid dysfunction, and clinical epidemiology. Prior to 2023, he maintained a weekly clinical practice and taught students, residents, and junior faculty. He currently leads NIH-funded studies and directs the Endpoints and Medication Coding Groups at the San Francisco Coordinating Center. Bauer founded and directs the CTSI-funded UCSF K Scholar Program and Resident Research Training Program, training clinical researchers across disciplines.

His research emphasizes osteoporosis treatment, atypical femoral fractures, and thyroid-related skeletal outcomes. He has served on the NIH Neurologic, Aging, and Musculoskeletal Epidemiology Study Section and the FDA Bone, Urologic and Reproductive Drug Advisory Committee (BRUDAC). Recent work includes studies on bisphosphonate efficacy, diabetes-fracture interactions, and cardiovascular risk in older adults.

Bauer’s NIH grants include projects on atypical femoral fractures, resident research training, and biomarker studies in musculoskeletal disease. Collaborative efforts involve international cohort studies and clinical trials like the TOPAZ trial for neurodegenerative patients. His work bridges clinical practice and translational research, emphasizing evidence-based guidelines for bone health and aging populations.
