Douglas A. Nitz is Professor and Chair of Cognitive Science at UC San Diego. His research program explores neural mechanisms underlying spatial navigation, memory formation, and decision-making processes across cortical and hippocampal circuits.
Research Approach: Combines electrophysiological recordings, behavioral analysis, and computational modeling to decipher how distributed brain networks represent spatial information and support memory-guided behaviors.
Current Focus: Neural coding principles in parietal-hippocampal networks during navigation tasks, with emphasis on path integration, landmark encoding, and route planning mechanisms.
