Doug A. Bowman

Doug A. Bowman is the Frank J. Maher Professor of Computer Science and Director of the Center for Human-Computer Interaction at Virginia Tech. He leads the 3D Interaction Group, specializing in three-dimensional user interfaces, VR/AR user experience, and immersion benefits in virtual environments.

• Education: B.S. in Mathematics and Computer Science from Emory University; M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from Georgia Institute of Technology.

His research focuses on advancing 3D interaction techniques, virtual and augmented reality, and understanding how immersive environments enhance user experience. He has contributed significantly to the development of 3D user interface frameworks and their practical applications.

Dr. Bowman has received prestigious recognition, including the NSF CAREER award, ACM Distinguished Scientist status, and the IEEE Technical Achievement award. He played a foundational role in the IEEE Virtual Reality Conference, serving as program chair, general chair, and steering committee chair, and co-founded the IEEE Symposium on 3D User Interfaces.
