Dr. Doris Unger is a Researcher in the Department of International Politics at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU). She coordinates the trinational Master's program in European Studies (with Universities of Dijon and Opole). Her roles include teaching seminars on international climate policy and military interventions, alongside extensive research on cultural diversity in liberal democracies, minority rights, and hate speech regulation. Dr. Unger holds a PhD from JGU (2017), with prior roles as a Lecturer (2009–2011) and Research Associate in Political Theory (2013–2015). She conducts interdisciplinary research on liberal egalitarianism and neorepublicanism, publishing in journals like European Union Politics and Critical Review of International Social and Political Philosophy. Her work addresses state cultural accommodation, anti-discrimination frameworks, and the challenges of hate speech in democratic societies.
Current research projects explore Alan Patten’s theories of cultural accommodation and the interplay between neorepublicanism and egalitarian-liberalism. Dr. Unger is on parental leave until September 2024 but maintains digital office hours for academic advising. She is affiliated with the SoCuM research center and contributes to international conferences on hate speech and political theory.
