Dr. Doris Dippold is a Senior Lecturer in Intercultural Communication at the University of Surrey, affiliated with the School of Literature and Languages, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, and the Surrey Institute for People-Centred Artificial Intelligence (PAI). Her academic career spans three continents and five countries (Germany, USA, China, Luxembourg, UK). She holds a PhD in Applied Linguistics (University of Southampton, 2007), a Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (University of Plymouth, 2007), and an MA in Germanic Languages and Literatures (University of Kansas, 2002).
Her research focuses on Human-Machine Interaction, particularly chatbots; Internationalisation of Higher Education, including English as a medium of instruction (EMI) and lingua franca (ELF); and Classroom interaction. She has collaborated with institutions like SPRYT, Islington GP Federation, and Account Management Online Limited (AMO.ai) on projects such as optimising medical appointment booking chatbots and securing £300,000 from Innovate UK for a 'Digital Salesperson'.
She supervises postgraduate research in areas like trilingualism, vocabulary acquisition, EMI practices in China, and pragmatics in high-risk environments. Her scientific awards include University of Surrey Innovator of the Year (2020) and Fellowship at the Surrey Institute for People-Centred AI. She coordinates the Global Citizenship module and leads the FutureLearn MOOC Communicating with Diverse Audiences, which has engaged 6,000 learners globally.
