Dorinda Outram is the Franklin W. & Gladys I. Clark Professor Emerita of History at the University of Rochester's Department of History within the School of Arts & Sciences. Her PhD in History was awarded by the University of Cambridge in 1974. Outram's research spans Enlightenment history, exploration studies, French Revolution, and history of science, with particular focus on cultural transformations in 18th-19th century Europe.
Her scholarship examines the intersection of scientific development, political revolution, and cultural change, exploring how bodies became political symbols during revolutionary periods and how scientific authority was reconfigured in post-revolutionary France. Outram has published extensively on French naturalist Georges Cuvier and Enlightenment-era exploration.
Outram's publications like 'The Body and the French Revolution' and 'Panorama of the Enlightenment' demonstrate her interdisciplinary approach combining cultural history, history of science, and political theory. Her work consistently investigates how scientific knowledge was produced, contested, and institutionalized during periods of profound social change.
She has supervised doctoral research in European history and the history of science while maintaining active engagement with public history through accessible scholarly works that contextualize Enlightenment thought for contemporary audiences.
