Dr. Donna Strickland is a Professor of Physics at the University of Waterloo, internationally recognized for her groundbreaking contributions to laser physics. Awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2018, she is renowned for developing the chirped-pulse amplification technique for ultrashort lasers alongside Dr. Gérard Mourou.
Dr. Strickland's research focuses on Laser Physics and Optics, particularly in the areas of Ultrashort Laser Pulses and Chirped-Pulse Amplification. Her pioneering work in the 1980s revolutionized the field by enabling the amplification of ultrashort laser pulses to petawatt intensity levels, which has led to widespread practical applications including laser eye surgery and precision micro-machining across various industries.
Her significant contributions to science have been recognized with:
- Nobel Prize in Physics (2018) for transposing the chirped-pulse amplification technique onto ultrashort lasers
As an active researcher and educator, Dr. Strickland continues to engage with the global scientific community, as evidenced by her November 2019 visit to Polytechnique Montréal where she presented her work, toured multiple laser research facilities including the Fabulas laboratory and LODI, and interacted extensively with faculty and students across engineering physics, electrical engineering, and related disciplines.
