Dongmin Liu, PhD is a Professor in the Department of Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise at Virginia Tech, affiliated with the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. He holds a PhD in Animal Nutrition and Physiology from Virginia Tech (2000) and has been a faculty member since 2004, advancing from Assistant to Associate Professor before becoming a full Professor in 2015. His research focuses on bioactive compounds for metabolic health, including identifying phytochemicals that delay aging and prevent obesity/diabetes.
Dr. Liu’s work utilizes rodent models and tissue culture techniques to study glucose/lipid metabolism, pancreatic islet function, and cellular signaling pathways. Key achievements include discovering kaempferol’s role in insulin sensitivity and genistein’s protective effects on pancreatic β-cells. He has authored over 80 peer-reviewed articles and serves on editorial boards of journals like Frontiers in Nutrition and Molecular Nutrition and Food Research.
Research interests span two core areas: 1) bioactive compound identification for diabetes prevention and 2) nutraceutical development for longevity. His lab employs immunohistochemistry, biochemical assays, and metabolic phenotyping. Awards include multiple Research Excellence Awards from Virginia Tech and a Postdoctoral Fellowship from the American Heart Association.
Dr. Liu’s presentations include talks on plant-derived small molecules at international conferences like the World Congress on Foods and Nutrition. He collaborates with institutions globally, including Henan University (China) and Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University. His future work emphasizes translating findings into clinical applications for metabolic disorders.
