Dr. Dong Sung An is a Professor at the UCLA School of Nursing and Associate Dean of Research and Innovation, with an additional affiliation at the UCLA AIDS Institute. His research focuses on developing anti-HIV-1 gene therapy strategies using hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). He aims to engineer HSCs to express protective genes against HIV, enabling lifelong immunity and targeting latent viral reservoirs. His work bridges basic science and clinical applications, with a focus on overcoming limitations of antiretroviral therapy (HAART).
Dr. An earned his MD from Yamaguchi University School of Medicine (1993) and a PhD in Virology from Tokyo Medical and Dental University (1997). His research spans HIV pathogenesis, gene delivery systems, and humanized mouse models. Key contributions include the development of lentiviral vectors for CCR5 knockdown and RNA interference (RNAi) strategies to inhibit HIV entry.
His scientific awards include the Soujinkan Award (2004). His publications highlight advancements in stem cell-based therapies, HIV resistance mechanisms, and translational research. Dr. An’s lab collaborates on projects such as engineering HIV-resistant T-cells and studying viral dissemination in bone marrow. Future work emphasizes clinical translation of gene therapy approaches to achieve HIV remission and cure.
