Donatella Stocchi-Perucchio is the Arnold Lisio and Anne Moore Lisio Endowed Distinguished Professor in Italian Language and Culture, and Associate Professor of Modern Languages and Cultures at the University of Rochester. She leads the Italian Program and directs the Literary Translation Studies (MALTS) program. Her research focuses on Dante Studies, medieval literature, and the intersection of literature with history and the arts. She holds a PhD from Cornell University and has held academic roles since 1986.
Education: PhD in Italian (Cornell University, 1986); MA in Italian (Cornell University, 1983); Laurea in Foreign Languages and Literatures (University of Florence, 1975).
Research Interests: Dante’s political philosophy, the Ventennio (Fascist era), digital humanities, and the reception of Dante across media. Current projects include a digital archive for Dante’s Divine Comedy iconography and interdisciplinary collaborations with the University of Siena and University of the Pacific, Peru.
Recent Articles: Her work explores Dante’s political thought, juridical literature, and modern adaptations of his legacy. Key themes include sovereignty, ethical state theory, and cross-cultural interpretations.
Awards: Honorary Professorship at University of the Pacific (2016–present); Clark Distinguished Teaching Award (1981).
Grants & Initiatives: Co-organized symposia such as “Dante Politico at the Crossroads of Arts and Sciences” (2021) and directed the University of Rochester’s Semester Program in Arezzo, Italy, since 1993.
Labs/Programs: Founded the Arezzo semester program, integrating Italian studies with medieval and archaeological perspectives. Collaborates on digital humanities projects and global cultural initiatives.
