Dr Donald MacLeod is a Senior Lecturer in Social & Environmental Sustainability at the University of Glasgow. He has held roles as a Visiting Professor at Macalester College (USA) and taught social anthropology at Goldsmiths' College, University of Oxford. His research focuses on the anthropology of tourism, globalization, cultural change, and sustainable development, with regional expertise in Scotland, the Dominican Republic, and the Canary Islands. He leads the Centre for Research into Regional Development and previously directed the Crichton Tourism Research Centre.
Education: D.Phil in Social Anthropology from the University of Oxford. Key research interests include ecotourism, cultural heritage, and identity branding. His work analyzes tourism's sociocultural impacts, particularly in island communities and marginalized regions.
Publications span over 30 peer-reviewed articles and books, including Sustainable Tourism in Rural Europe (2011) and Tourism, Globalization and Cultural Change (2004). His research often bridges theory and practice, addressing sustainable development challenges in tourism-dependent regions.
Grants include a £530,000 EU (ERDF) match-funded project for the Centre for Research into Regional Development and a Scottish Enterprise-funded Research Fellowship (2001-04). He supervises doctoral research on topics like screen tourism and geopolitical fan cultures.
Awards include Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Active memberships: Association of Social Anthropologists of the UK and Commonwealth, Royal Anthropological Institute.
