Donald Engelman is the Eugene Higgins Professor of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry at Yale University, affiliated with the Yale School of Medicine. He holds primary appointments in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry and is associated with multiple departments including Yale Cancer Center and the Engelman Lab. His research focuses on membrane protein structure, pH-dependent peptide insertion (pHLIP), and their applications in cancer therapy and imaging.
Education: BA in Physics from Reed College (1960s), PhD in Molecular Biophysics from Yale (1967), followed by postdoctoral work at UCSF and King’s College London.
Research Interests: Membrane biophysics, protein folding dynamics, and development of pHLIP technology for tumor targeting. Key projects include pHLIP-mediated drug delivery, imaging acidic tissues, and understanding transmembrane helix formation.
Publications highlight pHLIP’s role in tumor therapy, immunostimulation, and diagnostic imaging. Awards include Guggenheim Fellowship and membership in the National Academy of Sciences.
