Don Samitha Elvitigala is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Human Centred Computing at Monash University, affiliated with the Exertion Games Lab. His research focuses on novel human augmentations, leveraging everyday clothing and accessories to enhance human capabilities through implicit understanding of physical and mental behaviors. He holds a PhD in Human-Computer Interaction from the University of Auckland (2021), winning multiple accolades including the Best Thesis Award from the Auckland Bioengineering Institute.
Education: PhD in Human-Computer Interaction, University of Auckland (2018–2021). Prior to Monash, he was a postdoctoral fellow at UNSW Sydney, co-creating the HCI BoDi Lab. He also served as a Visiting Lecturer at the School of Computer Science and Engineering at UNSW.
Research interests include Human-Computer Interaction, Wearable Computing, and Haptics. His work addresses sustainable development goals through innovations like StressShoe (stress intervention tool) and TickleFoot (laugh-evoking mechanism). Recent articles explore topics such as lucid dream induction systems and telepathic superpower design via brain-muscle interfaces.
Awards include the Best Student Paper Award at PETRA 2021 and a nomination for the ACM Doctoral Thesis Award. He actively contributes to conferences like CHI and UbiComp, organizing events such as the Augmented Humans International Conference.
His advising focuses on PhD students in Human-Computer Interaction, Human Augmentations, and Ubiquitous Computing. Collaborations span global institutions, with a focus on wearable tech and sensory systems.
