Don Helme is Professor and Associate Dean for Research in the Department of Communication at the University of Kentucky's College of Communication and Information. His research focuses on health communication and substance use interventions.
Helme has secured over $101 million in grant funding, including NIH-supported projects addressing the opioid crisis. His HEALing Communities Study implements evidence-based interventions to reduce opioid-related mortality. Current research examines text-message interventions for prescription opioid safety and stigma reduction strategies.
His scientific awards include the Faculty Research Award (2020) and Graduate Mentor Award (2012). Helme also holds an adjunct position at Wake Forest School of Medicine and directs evaluation studies for national health campaigns.
