Dominique Garello is an Instructor in the Department of Geology & Geophysics at Louisiana State University (LSU), within the College of Science. He holds a PhD in Geosciences from Arizona State University and a Bachelor's degree in Geology and Evolutionary Anthropology from the University of California, Davis. His research focuses on integrating geochemical and geological techniques to reconstruct ancient environments and human evolution contexts, particularly in East African rift systems.
Garello's work centers on tephrochronology, sediment provenance analysis, and chronostratigraphic modeling. He has contributed to major projects like the Hominin Sites and Paleolakes Drilling Project (HSPDP), examining sediment cores from Ethiopia and Kenya to understand Pliocene-Pleistocene environmental changes. His studies link volcanic ash layers to hominin evolution timelines, including seminal work on Oldowan artifacts at Ledi-Geraru, Ethiopia, which pushed back the earliest dated Oldowan tools to over 2.58 million years ago.
His technical expertise includes laser ablation ICP-MS for tephra correlation, Bayesian age modeling, and multidisciplinary approaches to paleoenvironmental reconstruction. He maintains an active field presence in the Afar Depression and East African Rift Valley, combining core drilling data with outcrop studies to address questions about hominin habitats and climatic shifts.
