Prof. Dominic Papineau is a Professor in Precambrian Biogeochemistry and Exobiology at University College London's Earth Sciences department. His research focuses on the origin and evolution of life in Earth's first four billion years, with a particular emphasis on biosignature identification, early microbial biogeochemical cycles, and atmospheric oxygenation. He pioneered the use of correlative microscopy techniques, integrating optical, Raman, SEM, and NanoSIMS analyses to study ancient rocks.
He investigates astrobiological questions through studies of banded iron formations, stromatolites, phosphorites, and extraterrestrial samples. His work bridges Earth and planetary sciences, informing strategies for detecting life on Mars and other celestial bodies. Papineau teaches courses on Earth materials, geoscience reporting, and the origins of life.
Research interests include prebiotic chemistry, chemically oscillating reactions in sedimentary processes, and the interplay between microbial activity and mineral formation. Recent articles highlight innovations in understanding Ediacaran organic diagenesis, Neoproterozoic phosphorite preservation, and abiotic organic synthesis in deep-sea environments. His lab is part of the London Geochemistry and Isotope Centre (LOGIC) and the Centre for Planetary Sciences.
