Dominic Hewson is a Lecturer in Sociology at the School of Applied Social and Policy Sciences, Ulster University, within the Faculty of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences. His work bridges social theory, governance, and critical analysis of power dynamics.
- PhD in Sociology from University of Limerick (2014)
- Bachelor’s in Economics and Sociology from University of Limerick
His research focuses on neoliberalism, biopolitics, and the governance of asylum systems. He has examined privatization in Vietnamese education and the political economy of language instruction, drawing on Pierre Bourdieu’s theories. Current work explores shifting power-knowledge relationships from the Enlightenment to AI.
Dominic’s recent publications analyze disciplinary power in Ireland’s Direct Provision system, biopolitical risks in citizenship referendums, and commodification in ESL education. Themes span asylum studies, governance critiques, and education policy.
As an interdisciplinary educator, he teaches modules on sociological theory, political sociology, research methods, and globalization. He has contributed to programs across Sociology, Politics, and Business Schools at Ulster University and the University of Aberdeen.
He is affiliated with the Social Work and Social Policy Research group at Ulster University. His forthcoming book, Power. Knowledge. Governance: From the Enlightenment to Artificial Intelligence, synthesizes these themes.
