Domenico Umbrello

Domenico Umbrello is a Full Professor of Manufacturing Processes at the University of Calabria, Department of Mechanical, Energy and Management Engineering. He holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Calabria (2005) with thesis focused on the analysis of machining processes. His international experience includes being a Visiting Scholar at The Ohio State University (2003) and multiple Visiting Professor appointments at the University of Kentucky (2008, 2011, 2012).

Professor Umbrello's research spans multiple areas in advanced manufacturing, with particular focus on machining processes, surface integrity, cryogenic manufacturing, metal forming, and friction stir welding. His work integrates experimental and numerical approaches, particularly finite element modeling, to analyze and optimize manufacturing processes. Recent work has expanded into FEM-AI hybrid approaches for residual stresses optimization and sustainable machining processes.

His publication record includes over 120 scientific papers in international journals and conference proceedings. Current research trends show increasing focus on biomedical applications of manufacturing processes, advanced materials processing, and integration of artificial intelligence techniques in manufacturing optimization.

Professor Umbrello actively collaborates with international research groups at University of Kentucky, Ohio State University, Tokyo Denki University, ENSTA ParisTech, INSA Lyon, Mondragon University, University of Ljubljana, and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. He serves on the Board of Directors and Directive Council of ESAFORM and AITEM professional organizations. His laboratory work focuses on material characterization, physical prototyping, machine tools, adhesion mechanics, metrology, and mechanical technology with process sustainability.
