Dr. Doaa M. Baumi is a postdoctoral researcher and Teach@Tübingen Fellow 2025 at the Center for Islamic Theology, University of Tübingen, where she holds the Professorship for Islamic Doctrine. She teaches courses on Quranic and Islamic engagement with biblical figures at the Zentrum für Islamische Theologie (ZITH).
Her educational background includes:
- PhD in Islamic Studies from the University of Birmingham
- MA from the Divinity School of the University of Chicago
- BA from al-Azhar University in Cairo
Dr. Baumi's research focuses on the reception of biblical narratives and the development of theological concepts in classical Islamic thought. Her expertise spans Islamic theology (Kalām), Quranic exegesis, Islamic intellectual history, the reception of biblical material in Islamic literature, classical Arabic texts, and interreligious thought. She has developed a distinctive approach to examining how Islamic scholars historically engaged with biblical stories and figures, analyzing the theological implications of these interactions across different periods of Islamic intellectual history.
Her scholarly work demonstrates a consistent focus on intertextuality between Islamic and biblical traditions, with particular attention to how scriptural reasoning can foster intercultural understanding in contemporary contexts. Recent publications explore innovative approaches to teaching Islam across cultural boundaries and examining scriptural reasoning in digital environments, including studies on social distancing and online pedagogical tools for empowering women in Muslim societies.
Dr. Baumi has taught courses at the University of Birmingham and served as a co-lecturer in the Jewish-Christian-Muslim Relations program offered jointly by the University of Durham and the Scottish Episcopal Institute in fall 2024. Her teaching methodology emphasizes interfaith dialogue and cross-cultural understanding, particularly in the context of scriptural reasoning, with a special focus on how religious texts can be used to build bridges between different faith communities.
