Dmitry Aleynik is a Researcher at the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI), affiliated with the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS) and the SAMS UHI Energy Innovation Team. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Marine Processes and Climate from 1998. His research focuses on physical oceanography, particularly turbulence and mixing induced by tidal interactions with topography. He develops high-resolution numerical models (MITgcm, FVCOM, WRF) and operates the West Scotland Coastal Ocean Modelling System (WeStCOMS) for regional weather and ocean forecasts.
Education
- Doctor of Philosophy (1998), Keywords: physical oceanography, hydrodynamics, shelf sea modelling, internal waves
Research Interests
Alexinik's work addresses coastal ocean dynamics, climate impacts, and sustainable marine resource management. Key themes include tidal energy effects, harmful algal blooms, deep-sea mining recovery, and aquaculture sustainability. His interdisciplinary approach bridges numerical modeling with environmental policy.
Key Contributions
Recent work highlights include predicting harmful algal blooms, assessing deep-sea mining ecological impacts, and advancing mussel settlement models. His research contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to climate action and ocean health.
Awards
- Winning Video and Overall Competition Winning Title and the 1st prize (2017)
Grants & Projects
- AGRI-SATT: Agricultural Innovation via Remote Sensing and IoT (2020-2023)
- MIDAS: Managing Impacts of Deep-Sea Mining (2013-2016)
Labs & Teams
Leads the SAMS Modelling Group and collaborates with international teams on projects like WeStCOMS operational forecasting system.
