Dmitry A. Garanin serves as Associate Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Lehman College, City University of New York. His academic appointment includes membership in the CUNY Doctoral Faculty since 2006 and active research leadership in quantum magnetic phenomena.
His educational background includes a Ph.D. in Physics (1985) from Moscow State University with thesis work on magnetic relaxation processes under V.S. Lutovinov, and a combined B.S./M.S. in Physics (1978) from Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology where he studied ion structures in liquid helium with advisers V.L. Ginzburg and A.A. Sobyanin.
Professor Garanin's research focuses on quantum statistical theory of magnetic phenomena, specializing in spin-phonon relaxation dynamics, molecular magnet physics, and many-body systems. His theoretical contributions include the u-v transformation technique for spin operators, Landau-Lifshitz-Bloch equation development, and microscopic theory of the Phonon Bottleneck effect. His work bridges fundamental quantum mechanics with experimental nanomagnetism applications.
His scientific recognition includes:
- Fellow of the American Physical Society (2013) for theoretical work shaping molecular magnet research
As an active educator, he teaches undergraduate and graduate physics courses while maintaining significant synergistic activities including journal refereeing (Physical Review, Europhysics Letters), editorial roles for European Magnetic Symposia, and committee memberships for international nanomagnetism workshops. His funding sources include the Professional Staff Congress-CUNY.
Beyond physics, Professor Garanin maintains a parallel career as a published poet with numerous Russian-language collections and literary journal contributions since 2013, alongside outdoor pursuits including mountaineering and inline skating.
