Prof. Dr. Dirk Wentzel is a Professor of Economics and European Economic Relations at Pforzheim University, Germany. He holds the EU-funded Jean Monnet Chair since 2005 and directs the European Business, Politics, and Culture summer school (established with Pennsylvania State University in 2008). His academic journey includes studies at the University of Bonn, a PhD from Marburg (1994) in monetary theory, and a habilitation in media economics (2001). He has been a visiting professor at Penn State (2000–2002) and has research stays at institutions like Lomonosov Moscow State University and New York University.
His research focuses on institutional economics, European integration, and sports economics, particularly regulatory frameworks and financial fair play in football. He has authored/co-authored over 100 articles and books, including works on fiscal policy, monetary stability, and media economics. Notable awards include the Herbert Quandt Prize for his dissertation and a Humboldt Foundation fellowship.
Wentzel serves as editor of Schriften zu Ordnungsfragen der Wirtschaft and regularly contributes to Börsenzeitung. He advises over 100 Bachelor’s and Master’s theses annually and holds leadership roles such as President of the Humboldt Regional Group Karlsruhe-Pforzheim (since 2011) and trustee of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation.
