Dirk Schlimm is an Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy at McGill University, with an additional affiliation as an associate member in the School of Computer Science since 2007. He specializes in the history and philosophy of mathematics, logic, and cognitive science. His work explores the interplay between mathematical notation systems, cognitive processes, and historical developments in mathematical practices.
Education: PhD in Logic, Computation, and Methodology from Carnegie Mellon University (2005), M.Sc. from Carnegie Mellon University (2000), and Dipl.-Inf. from Technical University Darmstadt (1997). His research spans topics such as the evolution of mathematical notations, the role of axiomatics in discovery, and the cognitive dimensions of mathematical reasoning. He has held fellowships including the Humboldt Research Fellowship and has been a key figure in academic societies like the Association for the Philosophy of Mathematical Practice (APMP), serving as its President (2016–2020).
Research interests include the cultural and cognitive aspects of mathematical practices, the history of logic, and the design principles of notational systems. His recent work addresses neurodiverse learners' engagement with mathematical notations and the philosophical implications of symbolic representation in historical contexts. He has secured major grants, including SSHRC Insight Grants and FQRSC awards, supporting projects like 'The Abacus Representation of Numeral Systems.'
Schlimm is a frequent speaker at international conferences and has co-organized workshops on topics such as the philosophy of mathematical practice and the history of logical notations. His contributions extend to editorial roles, including the Collected Works of Rudolf Carnap and Historia Logicae.
