Prof. Dinshaw Balsara is a Professor in the Department of Physics & Astronomy and a Concurrent Professor in Applied Computational Mathematics & Statistics at the University of Notre Dame. He holds editorial roles at the Journal of Computational Physics and Computational Astrophysics and Cosmology. His research focuses on computational astrophysics, numerical magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), and high-performance computing. He has pioneered methods like divergence-free AMR-MHD, multidimensional Riemann solvers, and high-order numerical schemes (WENO, DG, PNPM). His work addresses astrophysical phenomena such as supernova-driven turbulence, accretion disk dynamics, and relativistic plasma flows.
Education:
- M.S. in Physics, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (1982)
- M.S. in Astronomy, University of Chicago (1989)
- Ph.D. in Physics, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1990)
Research Interests: Development of advanced numerical methods for hyperbolic PDEs, computational MHD, relativistic astrophysics, and exascale computing. His textbook Numerical PDE Techniques for Scientists and Engineers emphasizes practical implementation of finite difference and finite volume methods.
Awards:
- 2017 GIAN Award (India)
- 2014 DOE Excellence Award
Grants & Collaborations: Leads NSF-funded projects on discontinuous Galerkin methods, geodesic mesh frameworks, and two-fluid MHD turbulence modeling. His work bridges computational methods with astrophysical applications like star formation, supernova remnants, and magnetized O-star winds.
Labs & Teams: Develops open-source tools for high-order MHD simulations, including divergence-preserving schemes and adaptive mesh refinement on geodesic grids. Collaborates on space missions and exascale computing initiatives.
