Dr. Dineke Verbeek is an Associate Professor (Tenure Track) in the Faculty of Medical Sciences at the University of Groningen. She holds an adjunct position as a Rosalind Franklin Fellow and is affiliated with the Biology-Related, Artificial, and Interventional Neuroscience (BRAIN) research group and the Lifelong Learning, Education & Assessment Research Network (LEARN). Her work bridges clinical neurogenetics and medical education, with a focus on rare movement disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, and genetic mechanisms underlying ataxias and dystonias. She leads research into spinocerebellar ataxias, exploring genetic mutations, repeat expansions, and molecular pathways. Additionally, she contributes to advancing medical education through innovative research in pedagogical strategies and assessment methods.
Her research portfolio includes studies on the functional genetics of disorders like CANVAS (cerebellar ataxia, neuropathy, and vestibular areflexia syndrome), RFC1 mutations, and prodynorphin-related neurodegeneration. She also investigates cross-disease mechanisms linking depression, Alzheimer’s, and neurodegenerative conditions, emphasizing mitochondrial stress responses and synaptic plasticity roles. Collaborations span clinical genetics, molecular biology, and neuroimaging, with projects involving Dutch patient cohorts and international consortia.
Dr. Verbeek’s publications emphasize uncovering novel genetic risk loci, developing diagnostic frameworks for genetic variants of uncertain significance, and advancing therapeutic strategies for neurodegenerative disorders. Her interdisciplinary approach integrates basic science, clinical research, and educational innovation to address complex neurological challenges.
