Dimitrios Mitsouras

Dr. Dimitrios Mitsouras is a Professor of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and a Medical Physicist at the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center (SFVAMC). He chairs the MR Safety Committee at SFVAMC and directs the TRST 3D lab, providing 3D radiology services across the Veterans Affairs Sierra Pacific Network (VISN 21). Previously, he held faculty positions at Harvard Medical School (2004–2017) and the University of Ottawa (2017–2019). His research focuses on leveraging physics, applied mathematics, and computer science to advance medical imaging technologies for cardiovascular diseases. He has pioneered techniques in CT-based fractional flow reserve (CT-FFR), MRI for vascular surveillance, and 3D printing applications in medicine.

Research interests include non-invasive hemodynamic assessment via CT angiography, MRI optimization for vascular diseases (e.g., abdominal aortic aneurysms, peripheral arterial disease), and the integration of AI/deep learning in medical imaging. His work has led to a commercially validated CT-FFR product and over 100 peer-reviewed publications, earning awards like the NIH Career Development Award and RSNA Magna Cum Laude.

His educational contributions include developing 7 CME courses on 3D printing, computational fluid dynamics, and AI for the RSNA, training over 1,000 clinicians. His trainees have won multiple awards, including RSNA Research Awards and Young Investigator accolades from the European Society of Cardiology.
