Professor Dimitra Rigopoulou holds the position of Nicholas Kurti Senior Research Fellow and Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Oxford. She is also a Visiting Hasselblad Professor at Chalmers, Sweden, and a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for Astronomy, FORTH, Greece. Her academic journey includes a BSc from the University of Ioannina (Greece), a DPhil from the University of London (Queen Mary College), and an MA from Oxford.
Her research focuses on star formation, galaxy evolution, and luminous infrared galaxies, employing imaging and spectroscopic techniques with telescopes such as ALMA and the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). She explores the interplay between star-forming regions and active galactic nuclei (AGN), emphasizing the role of molecular gas in galactic dynamics.
Professor Rigopoulou has held roles including Leverhulme Fellow (2003–2008) and Research Lecturer (2008–2014) at Oxford, alongside a longstanding Senior Research Fellowship at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. She teaches astrophysics at both undergraduate and graduate levels and actively engages in public science outreach through talks and collaborations.
Her work contributes to major surveys like the Galaxy Activity, Torus, and Outflow Survey (GATOS), focusing on AGN feedback mechanisms, PAH emission analysis, and obscured galaxy nuclei. She collaborates internationally, leveraging JWST and other advanced facilities to study galactic evolution across cosmic time.
