Didier Boichard serves as an INRAE Director of Research in the Bovine Genetics and Genomics team at the Animal Genetics and Integrative Biology Laboratory (GABI), a joint unit of Université Paris-Saclay, INRAE, and AgroParisTech. His pioneering work in genomic selection has revolutionized cattle breeding practices worldwide, transitioning from traditional progeny testing to modern genomic selection techniques that allow for early animal assessment.
Boichard's research interests focus on advancing genomic selection methodologies while maintaining genetic diversity in cattle populations. His work spans sustainable breeding practices that balance multiple traits including milk production, health, morphology, longevity, docility, and increasingly, methane emissions and thermotolerance. He has made significant contributions to detecting genetic anomalies in cattle through large-scale genotyping and developed innovative methods for predicting methane production using milk infrared spectra.
- Research Leadership: Headed INRA's animal genetics department (2002-2009) overseeing 500 personnel
- Major Projects: Co-founded the 1000 Bull Genomes Consortium Project (2013) and developed the Labogena Economic Interest Grouping (EIG)
- Collaborations: Works with Institut de l'élevage (Idele) and Eliance federation through the eBIS Joint Technology Unit
Boichard's scientific achievements have been recognized with prestigious awards including the French Academy of Agriculture's Gold Medal (2015), INRAE's Impact award (2016), and the French Academy of Sciences' Dujarric de la Rivière Award (2024). His work demonstrates exceptional synergy between research and practical breeding applications, utilizing one of the world's most extensive cattle databases containing pedigree, reproduction, production, health, and carcass value characteristics.
Boichard leads research into epigenetics in cattle, having contributed to the development of the first epigenotyping chip for large-scale analysis of DNA methylation. His team continues to develop methods for identifying genetic mutations responsible for embryonic mortality and shortened lifespan, while exploring strategies to reduce methane emissions through genomic selection and management practices.
