Dr. Diana Moss is a Teaching Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), part of the College of Science. She holds a B.A., M.S., and Ph.D. in Discrete Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Mathematics Education respectively, all from UNR. Her career includes faculty roles at Appalachian State University (four years) and Utah State University (two years) before joining UNR in 2020.
- B.A. Discrete Mathematics (2006)
- M.S. Applied Mathematics (2008)
- Ph.D. Curriculum, Teaching, and Learning with an emphasis in Mathematics Education (2014)
Her research explores children’s mathematical thinking, middle grades algebraic learning, undergraduate fraction conceptualization, and strategies for elementary teacher education. Notably, she investigates tensions between objectivist and constructivist pedagogical approaches in online STEM education and emphasizes rehumanizing mathematics through embodied-focused noticing.
Dr. Moss was honored with the 2020 College of Science Young Alumni of the Year, recognizing her contributions to education and service within her academic community. She designs courses that bridge mathematics and science for elementary educators while advocating for reflective practice and formative assessment in teaching.
- Advising: No named advisees listed
- Grants: No grants explicitly mentioned
Her work often intersects with constructivist theory, leveraging representation and manipulatives (e.g., dominoes) to enhance conceptual understanding. Courses taught span foundational mathematics and specialized teacher training modules.
